How To Market Services

Authentic Promotion is not a "how to" program, it's a program that can show you how marketing can be a meaningful, purposeful, and engaging process of personal transformation. As you put the principles and practices of AP to work, you will find that you want to know more about marketing. You'll want to know where to go for marketing methods that work. Here are some of my favorite marketing how to's.

Be Yourself Marketing, Kendall SummerHawk
I love Kendall’swork, and I own many of her tapes and ebooks. She is an expert at teaching you simple, clear, and authentic ways to talk about your work and get clients. I think you’ll love her, too!

The E-Myth Revisited, by Michael Gerber
Learn to work on rather than in or for your business. This is a deceptively simple book. Read it, reflect on it, read it again.

Get Clients Now! C. J. Hayden
A 28-day program, designed by a professional coach, for getting clients into your practice. Good for folks who like things step-by-step.

Guerrilla Marketing: Secrets for Making Big Profits from Your Small Business, Jay Conrad Levinson
I like to work from first principles and to have plenty of examples to get my creative juices flowing. This book gives an excellent overview of how to market effectively as well as lots of ideas for doing so.

Guerrilla PR: How to Wage an Effective Publicity Campaign Without Going Broke, Michael Levine
Just what it says: a complete guide to getting publicity without spending a lot of money. Publicity is often more effective than advertising as people tend to be more skeptical of ads than they do of
newspaper or magazine articles.

How to Really Create a Successful Business Plan, David Gumpert
A no-nonsense, non-threatening, practical guide to planning your business, complete with sample plans.

How to Survive and Prosper as an Artist: Selling Yourself Without Selling Your Soul, Caroll Michels.
My favorite “how to” business book for artists.

Marketing Your Services: A Step-by-Step Guide for Small Businesses and Professionals, Anthony O. Putman
Start at the beginning, read slowly and do the exercises and this could be the only book you’ll need.

Marketing Your Services: For People Who Hate to Sell, Rick Crandall
This book is another good overview-plus-specific-strategies reference. It is arranged in a more visually interesting way that Putman’s book (above), so may be easier for some folks to digest.

NicheCraft: Using Your Specialness to Focus Your Business, Corner Your Market, and Make Customers Seek You Out, Dr. Lynda Falkenstein
A nine-step process for creating a niche. Lots of exercises.

The Publicity Hound, Joan Stewart
Joan’s Web site, newsletter, Special Reports, and audio tapes teach you to get free publicity so you can reach your ideal audience. Highly recommended.
